History

They called it a "Grindhouse".

Theatres that showed low-budget horror, splatter, and absurd movies for adults. The name came from the "grind policy", dating back to the 1920s, of showing non-stop films, all day long, at cut-rate prices.

Mostly in urban areas, like the infamous 42nd Street in New York City and Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, "Grindhouse" theatres stretched across North America for a time.

Even Vancouver's own Orpheum Theatre took a turn as a "Grindhouse".

Eventually urban decay, suburbanization, home video, and cable movie channels rendered all but the most resilient theatres obsolete.

Now the Grindhouse Film Club is bringing the Grindhouse back. Join us for screenings at the historic cinema in Hope, British Columbia.
